Is Your MCS-150 Biennial Update Due in 2026? Here’s How to Check

MCS-150 biennial update 2026 deadline for USDOT carriers

Every motor carrier with a USDOT number is required by federal law to file an MCS-150 biennial update — even if nothing about your operation has changed. Miss the deadline and the FMCSA can deactivate your USDOT number and hit you with fines. Here is how to know if yours is due in 2026 and what to do about it.

What is the MCS-150?

The MCS-150 is the Motor Carrier Identification Report. It keeps your company’s information — fleet size, mileage, contact details, and operation type — current with the FMCSA. The agency uses this data for safety monitoring, so keeping it accurate is not optional.

How to tell if your update is due in 2026

Your filing schedule is based on your USDOT number, and it follows a simple rule:

  • Look at the second-to-last (next-to-last) digit of your USDOT number.
  • If that digit is even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8), you file in even years — including 2026.
  • If that digit is odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9), you file in odd years.
  • The last digit of your USDOT number determines the month your update is due.

So if your second-to-last digit is even, your MCS-150 update is due sometime in 2026 — and the exact month depends on your final digit.

What happens if you miss it

Missing your MCS-150 deadline is one of the fastest ways to get into trouble with the FMCSA. The consequences include deactivation of your USDOT number, civil penalties, and the loss of your ability to operate legally. An inactive USDOT number can also create problems with insurance, brokers, and shippers.
