form 2290 filing is open: how to get your 2026–2027 stamped schedule 1 before august 31

Every August 31st, thousands of owner-operators scramble to file their Form 2290 at the last minute — and every year, a significant number of them miss the deadline, file it wrong, or get their stamped Schedule 1 too late to renew their IRP plates on time. The result is trucks parked, loads missed, and money lost that should have stayed in their pocket.

The 2026–2027 HVUT filing season is open right now. If you have not filed yet, here is everything you need to know to get it done correctly before the deadline hits.

What Is Form 2290 and Who Must File

Form 2290 is the IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return. It is required for any vehicle with a gross taxable weight of 55,000 pounds or more that operates on public highways. The tax year runs from July 1 through June 30, and the filing deadline for vehicles used in July is August 31.

If you purchased a new truck or put a vehicle into service after July 1, your deadline is the last day of the month following the month you first used the vehicle. For example, if your truck first operated in August, your 2290 is due September 30.

The Tax Amounts for 2026–2027

  • 55,000 to 75,000 lbs: $100 base rate plus $22 for each 1,000 lbs over 55,000
  • Over 75,000 lbs: Maximum tax of $550 per vehicle per year
  • Logging vehicles: 75% of the standard rate applies
  • Suspended vehicles (under 5,000 miles): File the return but pay no tax — you still must file

Why the Stamped Schedule 1 Matters So Much

The Stamped Schedule 1 is your proof of payment. You cannot renew your IRP apportioned plates without it. You cannot register a new vehicle without it. If you are a new carrier, your IRP office will not issue plates until your Schedule 1 is on file. If your Schedule 1 is not ready before your plates expire, your truck cannot legally operate — and that means every day without it is revenue you are not earning.

E-filing through an IRS-approved provider typically produces your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes of IRS acceptance. Paper filing by mail can take weeks. In July and August, when the IRS processes a massive volume of 2290 returns, paper filing times get even longer. E-file is the only option that guarantees you get your Schedule 1 in time to meet plate renewal deadlines.

The Most Common 2290 Filing Errors

A rejected or incorrect 2290 means starting over — and delays that push your plate renewal past your operating deadline. The most common errors we see:

  • Wrong VIN: A single digit error on your Vehicle Identification Number results in IRS rejection. The corrected VIN requires a VIN correction amendment filing.
  • Wrong weight category: Filing at the wrong gross taxable weight — usually underreporting — triggers an IRS notice and potential audit
  • Using last year’s EIN or business name incorrectly: If your business information does not exactly match your IRS records, the return may be flagged
  • Filing for the wrong tax period: The 2026–2027 tax year covers July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. Filing for the wrong period wastes time and does not satisfy your obligation

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if I bought a new truck after July 1, 2026?

Your filing deadline is the last day of the month following the month you first used the vehicle on public highways. If the truck first operated in July, the deadline is August 31. If it first operated in August, the deadline is September 30. The partial-year tax is prorated based on the number of months remaining in the tax year from the month of first use.

2. Do I need to file a 2290 if my truck is currently not in service?

If the vehicle is not being used on public highways during the tax year, you are not required to file. However, if you plan to put it back in service, you must file before operating it. If the vehicle was used during the prior tax year and you are now suspending it, you should file the return and claim a suspended vehicle status for the new year.

3. Can I get a refund if I sell my truck mid-year?

Yes. If you paid the full year’s HVUT and then sold, destroyed, or otherwise disposed of the vehicle before June 30, you are eligible for a prorated credit or refund for the unused months. You claim this by filing Form 2290 with a credit claim or by filing Form 8849 to request a refund directly. The credit can also be applied against future HVUT obligations.
